A new poll by ABC this morning reports that 1 in 3 Americans are still considering the prospect of voting for a Third Political Party this November.
Fifty-seven percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the choice between Donald Trump andHillary Clinton, according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll earlier this month. But, can third-party presidential candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson turn that dissatisfaction into votes this November?
Asked how they would vote in a four-way race including Johnson and Stein, respondents to the ABC News/Washington Post poll released Aug. 7 gave Hillary Clinton an eight-point lead over Trump, 45 percent to 37 percent, with Johnson at 8 percent, and Stein at 4 percent.
Now, together with ABC News’ partners at SSRS survey research firm, we asked in an online poll of randomly chosen respondents if they are considering voting for a third-party candidate: 35 percent said yes.
Asked how worried they are, if at all, that votes for a third-party candidate could cause their least preferred candidate to win the presidency, 59 percent said they are worried: 35 percent somewhat worried, 15 percent very worried, and 9 percent extremely worried.
There is still a yearning for another choice and it is evident in this new poll.
The biggest question that might come up is why are Johnson and Stein not doing better when they are included in polls? The answer is quite simple. The polls are still controlled by the two major parties and a pollster can get any answer and response they want by how they word the question.
I would predict that Gary Johnson’s numbers are higher than being reported. He probably has over 20% of the vote in this country, but the polls are biased towards Trump and Clinton which are holding his numbers down.
This “new poll” was from Aug 7 2016, while I applaud you for reporting on 3rd party candidates as a viable option; this poll was inaccurately taken and it is unethical to continue to share this misleading information gathered by this poll.
This like many polls is inaccurately questioned and reported on. There is no need for a D&R question, then a question including all of the candidates. This is misleading and millions of Americans have been calling, writing, posting, & tweeting asking each and every news station & polling agency to perform the polls legitimately. i.e. There only need be one question not two when asking who you are voting for. If the election were held today who would you vote for Jill Stein, Gary Johnson, Hillary Clinton, & Donald Trump- alternating the order of names only! Furthermore many Americans being polled are not even allowed to state they are voting 3rd party or for Gary Johnson as it is not offered as a choice not allowed to be an answer forcing many to not participate or have to choose between the D&R candidates even if they have no inclination of supporting either of the two. If you want to be really efficient you should also is a sample of Americans in your polls that is relevant to the American registered voters i.e. Over 50% of Americans are registered as independent therefore for the most accurate results over 50% of independent American voters should be polled with the remaining 50% split between D&R to accurately provide a poll that reflects the American public. Many of the polls do not list the % of Indy,D,&,R polled; and the ones that do show about 10% Indy with 90% spilt between D&R even though that is a gross misrepresentation of how the American public will vote and who they are supporting today.
Please make all polls accurate and fair so they can be an actual & factual representation.
