The Electoral College is the Only Firewall to Stop a Trump Presidency & It Is a Real Possibility

The Presidential election has come and gone, but there are 538 people in this country that hold a big responsibility and that is actually electing the next President of the United States.

There is a growing movement across this country of Electors that are considering the possibility of becoming faithless in order to stop Donald Trump from attaining the Presidency. The Electoral College is a firewall against many different aspects of our society and one is the prevention of unqualified (crazy) people from becoming President.

In Colorado, there is a band of Electors that have begun meeting and making headway with other Electors in other states to stop Trump from achieving the 270 necessary to be elected and toss the election to the House of Representatives.  Yes, there are many that will say “but Hillary won Colorado.” This is true, but this shows that there is a consensus among all Electors that stopping Donald Trump from becoming President is essential to the preservation of this republic. To the point that they will vote their conscience and not vote for Hillary, but rather a qualified (sane) Republican to be considered by the House.

From the Colorado Independent:

The Colorado electors who attended the Denver meeting Saturday are just four out of 538 national college electors across the country. They are also part of an emerging movement within the national membership who have been dubbed “Hamilton Electors,” after Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, who discussed his beliefs in the Federalist papers about the role of the Electoral College as a way to prevent unqualified candidates from becoming president.

The framers of the U.S. Constitution set up this system as a check against direct democracy, which they did not trust. Because of it, each state is allotted a number of electors based on how many members of Congress the state has. In most states, the winner of the popular vote, no matter how slim the margin, takes all of that state’s electoral votes. The nominee who reaches 270 or more Electoral College votes wins the presidency no matter who racked up more actual ballots cast. Trump received 306 projected Electoral College votes to Clinton’s 232. Clinton, however, received more than 2 million more votes than Trump nationwide.

Even in Texas, a Republican Elector has resigned his post because he can’t stomach voting for Trump. From The Hill:

A Republican presidential elector from Texas has decided to step down rather than cast his vote for Donald Trump.

Art Sisneros told Politico earlier this year that he was considering voting against Trump, but decided this week to resign instead.

“If Trump is not qualified and my role, both morally and historically, as an elected official is to vote my conscience, then I can not and will not vote for Donald Trump for President,” the Texas Republican said in a blog post.

“I believe voting for Trump would bring dishonor to God.”

Let’s say this were to happen and Donald Trump was denied the 270 necessary to get elected what would happen next? The consensus among the Electors is that a qualified Republican would be chosen, perhaps a Mitt Romney, and then the House of Representatives would pick that person over Trump. This would save this country from a disastrous Trump Presidency and keep the Republic alive.

This is not a tactic that goes against the will of the people. Unfortunately, the American people are clueless to the fact that they don’t actually pick the President, but rather pick Electors that vote on their behalf. This is a Republic, not a Democracy. “A presupposition that wise Electors who know how to nominate individuals of character, experience, virtue, and integrity underlies the whole process. The wisdom and integrity of the Electors is essential. The independence of the Electors is even more crucial. For the system to work, Electors must know how to choose—not be told who to choose.”[6]

The Electoral College is the firewall against tyranny for a reason. This position of President should not be viewed the way that it is in our society, but rather a group of faithless men and women protect this country from the likes of Donald Trump.

Alexander Hamilton said it best, “The process of election affords a moral certainty, that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications. Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honors in a single State; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence of the whole Union, or of so considerable a portion of it as would be necessary to make him a successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States. It will not be too strong to say, that there will be a constant probability of seeing the station filled by characters pre-eminent for ability and virtue.”[8]

  1. Be careful what you wish for. Circumventing the Electoral College is a step away from the political system that has worked for the US for a couple of centuries. It also ignores the fact that people voted for Trump. They went to the polls, they considered their choices, and they voted for the person they hoped would lead the nation. To award the Presidency to the losing candidate is just wrong.

  2. I agree with the first comment. Trump won. Hard to believe, but the Constitution will get us through the next four years. I am also unsubscribing, because this type of message leads us down the wrong path.

  3. If I understand it correctly, if nobody gets 270 electoral votes, the House has to decide between the top three candidates. That would be Hillary, Trump and Gary Johnson. I don’t think the House can just pick someone like Romney.
