Free markets leading to discrimination is a common criticism among the left due to conservatives and libertarians views that the government has no place to tell a business who they can and cannot serve. Imani Gandy of Rewire claims “[…] if we could rely on the free market to end discrimination, we wouldn’t have needed the Civil Rights Act in the first place.”
But these beliefs seem to be thrown out the window when it concerns someone the left disagrees with. Saturday, Buzzfeed reported that infamous White Nationalist, Richard Spencer, had his gym membership terminated after a customer approached and loudly called him a Neo-Nazi.
Christine Fair, the women who confronted Spencer stated “As a white woman, I find his membership at this gym to be unacceptable. I found his membership at this gym to be an unfair burden upon the women and people of color — and white male allies of the same.”
I applaud this business for exercising their property rights and refusing to serve someone they disagree with, but this is lost on those who commented on Being Liberal’s Facebook share of this article. “What a whiner he is. All upset because he’s not doing anything wrong, just going about his business of living,” stated one person, while another claimed “How does your own medicine taste you jerk?”
In a free market where property rights were respected, any business would be able to kick out any person for any reason. The irony is that while the left claims a free market would allow people like Spencer to be racist anywhere they go, his gym canceling his membership is an example of the market fighting against discrimination.
how is wanting spencer out for being a fashy piece of shit the same as not wanting businesses to be able to kick people out for immutable characteristics of their being? are y’all really this dumb? honestly
