Lessons on Libertarianism #3-Expression and Communication

To continue our series on the Libertarian platform we turn to the next aspect of Personal Liberty, Expression and Communication.

The LP platform states that:

“We support full freedom of expression and oppose government censorship, regulation or control of communications media and technology. We favor the freedom to engage in or abstain from any religious activities that do not violate the rights of others. We oppose government actions which either aid or attack any religion.”

As a company that benefits from the concept of free expression  and communication media/technology this one hits home.

The idea that we have a right as people to freely express ourselves and that government can’t censor, regulate, or control that expression is a fundamental element of personal liberty. As free people we reserve every right to oppose the actions being taken by our government that might harm our liberty, and the modes of communication are the current engine in which to have that relationship.

The second piece to this is the right to engage or abstain form religious activities. The freedom of expression in religion allows one to communicate with whatever God or deity that they believe in without interference from the government, as long as that doesn’t harm other people.

With personal liberty and the fact that we own our own bodies the freedom of expression and communication is just an extension of that right. Governments for ages have tried to restrict speech and expression in hopes that it will shutter any oposition, but in turn that goes agaisnt every fundamental principle Libertarians and free people hold dear.

Join us next time as we explore the next element in the LP platform, privacy!
