Kid Rock Announces Senate Run, May Be a Libertarian

With the discovery of a campaign website stating that Kid Rock for Senate, many thought that it was a joke, but according the artist, he website is real.

Kid Rock also stated via Twitter that he has a big announcement in the future, which could be his official announcement for his campaign.

What’s exciting about this announcement is that the Detroit musician might be a Libertarian. The Libertarian Republic wrote an article questioning whether Kid Rock was a lover of liberty based on his song lyrics.

The article states “Rock is on record as saying that he is fiscally “Republican” but that he has been disillusioned by the party’s stances on social issues. He is in favor of the legalization of all drugs (even though he himself does not condone their use) and thinks that contentious issues like gay marriage and abortion should be left to individuals to decide.”

Rock also stated in an op-ed published by the Guardian that “I am definitely a Republican on fiscal issues and the military, but I lean to the middle on social issues. I am no fan of abortion, but it’s not up to a man to tell a woman what to do. As an ordained minister I don’t look forward to marrying gay people, but I’m not opposed to it.”

Legalizing and taxing marijuana, heroin and cocaine was also one of the opinions that Kid Rock explained, which lines up perfectly with the Libertarian Party platform. The rap-rock icon recognized that prohibition of these drugs doesn’t prevent them from being used explaining “Has it not been proven that people will always find a way to get what they want.”

If Kid Rock truly is a Libertarian, he could be a great platform to spread the ideology and perhaps get another liberty minded voice in Congress. For now, we’ll have to wait for for further details, but the prospect of having a celebrity Libertarian Republican candidate is very exciting.

Is Kid Rock *truly* a libertarian? Does it matter so long as he is able to shrink the size and power of government? In the end that is the only value of libertarianism applied to the real world.
