Justin Amash: The Most Real Member of Congress

Out of the 535 members of Congress it is difficult to find someone that embodies the values and character of a true servant of the people. This country has been through an interesting cast of characters in Congress going back centuries. Many are there to serve their own interests and tend to spend their entire careers in Washington and have nothing to show for it. However, once in a great while someone comes along that values principle above party and control. For a long time that was Congressman Ron Paul of Texas who stood for what he believed instead of cow towing to the party establishment and the grasps of power in DC. Ever since Paul retired from Congress many have looked for whom would take that title.

Congressman Justin Amash of Michigan has taken those reigns and is now the most real member of Congress. As somebody that has no care for the typical party control, Congressman Amash has been making a name for himself and challenging the status quo which has put him in a position to be the voice of opposition for many in this country.

Congressman Amash was the one of the only Republicans to stand in opposition to President Trump and his insane rhetoric as he rose to power and has governed this country since 2016. He has also been objectionable to the way that Congress has conducted themselves during his time in Congress.

In a recent interview with the Detroit Metro Times Amash told the magazine that from his vantage point, the legislative process had broken down, replaced with what he calls “an elaborate form of performance art” in which “people have capitulated and allowed the system to consume them.” And he doesn’t see things getting better any time soon.

Congress needs servants like Amash who understand that principle rises above party loyalty. In his famous op-ed in the Washington Post when he resigned from the Republican Party he said, “I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party. No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us. I’m asking you to believe that we can do better than this two-party system — and to work toward it. If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it.”

It is time for something different in the United States and Justin Amash breathes a breath of fresh air for many that have read and listened to his words. Anybody that rejects the two party system has a firm understanding on how this country should be governed. Too often we rely on the direction of the major political parties, but that always leads to the downfall of the American political establishment and why nothing ever gets done in this country. It is time to get behind leaders like Justin Amash and think differently about this country and our direction.
